چکیده

A new linear multiuser detector that directly minimizes the bit-error rate (BER) subject to a set of reasonable constraints is proposed. It is shown that the constrained BER cost function has a unique global minimum. This allows us to develop an efficient barrier Newton method for finding the coefficients of the proposed detector using information about timing, amplitudes, channels, and the signature signals of all users. Although the new detector cannot be shown to be optimal among linear multiuser detectors without the constraints imposed, extensive simulations demonstrate that it achieves the lowest BER. Furthermore, in some cases, the BER of the proposed detector can be significantly lower than that of the decorrelating and MMSE detectors.

Nonlinear Optimization for the Multiuser Downlink

We investigate nonlinear pre-equalization techniques for the downlink of multiuser systems from a transmitter equipped with multiple antennas to noncooperative single antenna mobile receivers. Besides linear Multiuser Transmission (MUT), known as Transmit Zero Forcing or Transmit Wiener Filters, recently nonlinear Minimum Bit Error Rate (BER) MUT was proposed. The latter computes the transmit s...

Approximate Minimum Bit - Error Rate Multiuser Detection

— The minimum mean-squared-error (MMSE) linear multiuser detector [1–2] is popular because of its good performance and amenability to adaptive implementation. However , there are circumstances in which the linear detector that minimizes bit-error rate (BER) can significantly outperform the MMSE detector. We propose a low-complexity adaptive algorithm for approximating the minimum-BER linear mul...

Turbo Multiuser Detection Architectures

The discovery of Turbo Codes in 1996 by Berrou et. al. proved to be a huge boost for the research of channel coding. The Turbo Principle behind turbo codes was found to be applicable in other areas. One of these areas is Multiuser Detection. In this thesis, Turbo Multiuser Detection is investigated in order to answer two main questions. The questions concern the performance gain that is obtaine...

Adaptive multiuser receivers for DS-CDMA using minimum BER gradient-Newton algorithms

In this paper we investigate the use of adaptive minimum bit error rate (MBER) Gradient-Newton algorithms in the design of linear multiuser receivers (MUD) for DS-CDMA systems. The proposed algorithms approximate the bit error rate (BER) from training data using linear multiuser detection structures. A comparative analysis of linear MUDs, employing minimum mean squared error (MMSE), previously ...
